Empowering Women in Tech

By Devin Nori March 7, 2023

As of 2022, women make up less than a third of the world’s workforce in technology-related fields. At ivision, we’re committed to empowering our women to develop their skillsets, personal goals and career paths to reach their highest potential. Each member of our team comes with a unique background that led them to ivision, and in celebration of International Women’s Day, we’d like to share a few of their stories and their advice for other women interested in tech careers.

Betsy Lopez – Service Desk Analyst II

Betsy’s Career Journey

After graduating college with a bachelor’s in Sociology, I realized there wasn’t much I could do with my degree, so I took some time to reflect on what it was I wanted to do. At the time, I was working at a cellphone store, and I knew that I loved taking the phones apart and learning all about them. It sparked my curiosity in learning how to enter the tech space and what avenues I could pursue.

Why did you choose a career in technology?

The main reason I chose a career in tech is because of the great work-life balance it can provide. Another reason is because I love learning new things about different technologies. It was a good rabbit hole I couldn’t seem to get out of. Technology provides so much for us and what we do on a day-to-day basis, I just want to be a small part of that growth.

What advice would you give women or girls wanting to pursue a career in tech?

Do it! We need more women in tech. It’s a growing industry that pays well, and you can enjoy what you do. One thing I will say is to never get too comfortable in one place or role because that means you’ve stopped learning. The more you learn the more you grow, and in tech they encourage growth and upward mobility.

Who/what influenced your decision to explore a technology career?

A big influence that pushed me to enter the tech space was TikTok. There were a lot of influencers who provided insightful information and “day in the life” videos that inspired me to start my journey.

Dhruti’s Career Journey

My career journey started in Toronto, where I graduated as Systems Analyst. I didn’t see myself as a Programmer, therefore I chose a route to go with technical support. I also enjoyed interacting with people, and I got satisfaction from helping people and seeing them accomplish what they were trying to do. That’s how I ended up at Helpdesk/desktop support.

Why did you choose a career in technology?

The reason I choose a career in technology was my cousin who was into computers, and what she did got me interested into technology.

I personally think it’s the best career to be in. All different areas of technology will lead you to different career in life – a career which will let you have home/work/life balance. This career will not only let you purse technology, but it also will let you explore yourself and lead you to a career that interests you to combine technology with it.

My cousin was studying computers when I was in high school. Looking at her and just having high school courses, it interested me career into technology.

Landy Mondesir – Delivery Manager

Landy’s Career Journey

My career journey has not been a straight line. I’ve worked as a mutual funds liaison representative, an operations manager at a large bank and a teacher. As I gained experience in these positions, I saw that the foundation for it all was technology. So, I made the decision to get Cisco certified. From there, I started working as a systems/business analyst and eventually an IT project manager. Each position has given me a broader knowledge set that enabled me to take on positions of increasing responsibility and scope.

Why did you choose a career in technology?

I realized that technology is interwoven into everything in our modern world and life. I wanted to be a part of it.

What advice would you give women or girls wanting to pursue a career in tech?

Go for it!!! The same advice I give my daughters. My oldest daughter is in the Air Force working as an IT Security Specialist. My second is at university studying Computer Science.
