Who?

Anyone with existing presence in Microsoft 365. Any automation, email-based alerting that uses your Exchange Online tenant, or user-facing applications like mobile email clients could be affected.

What?

Microsoft is disabling Legacy authentication in Exchange Online for Exchange ActiveSync (EAS), POP, IMAP, Remote PowerShell, Exchange Web Services (EWS), Offline Address Book (OAB), Outlook for Windows and Mac. All these authentication methods will transition to Modern authentication, which essentially means instead of sending both your username and password to an application, your information will be redirected to an identity provider for authentication. This enables multi-factor authentication, and services like Windows Hello for Business to be enforced. Allowing Basic authentication in your Microsoft 365 tenant can mean attackers can bypass MFA policies in some cases.

This change may disrupt end user email productivity or break applications that connect to Exchange Online services if legacy authentication is still in use.

When?

While Legacy authentication has already deactivated for new Microsoft 365 tenants, the official switch for existing users will be effective on October 1, 2022

Why?

As more effective user authentication alternatives have been developed, Legacy authentication has become outdated. This transition will strengthen your application security and help protect your environment from threats.
