LM Config Infrastructure Performance Monitoring Platform Drive Key Business Outcomes for Enterprises and Service Providers
Most unplanned outages are caused by poorly planned configuration changes made by administrators, operations teams, or developers.
LogicMonitor is the SaaS-based, infrastructure performance monitoring platform designed for the modern business. Its built-in automation and agility help drive key business outcomes for enterprises and service providers.
LM Config integrates configuration monitoring and management directly into LogicMonitor’s existing infrastructure monitoring platform. Users can now view, manage, alert on, and restore device configurations from within LogicMonitor. In addition to increasing compliance and consolidating tools, putting configuration management and infrastructure monitoring in the same platform allows teams to correlate performance data with changes to device configurations.
Configuration Management in Context
In a Gartner analysis, authors George Spafford and Ronni Colville identify configuration management as a key challenge facing the modern IT organization. They argue that “speed and complexity are driving the need for effective configuration management.” As the technical frameworks underpinning the modern enterprise continue to become more layered and distributed, “it will become increasingly difficult to provide accurate risk assessments” without a trusted repository of configuration data.
According to their analysis, “business customers are demanding that IT deliver new functionality to production faster; however, IT is unable to comply due to growing complexity and a lack of trustworthy configuration data.” The key recommendation is to improve visibility into configuration data by “revis[ing] configuration processes” and using a dedicated configuration management tool.
LM Config presents an opportunity to act on that recommendation while leveraging the existing scalability, automation, and performance of the LogicMonitor platform. The following selection of case studies offers insight into LM Config, describing the experiences of several LogicMonitor customers as they’ve used LM Config in their daily operations.
iVision offers their customers fully managed “enterprise-class technology infrastructure, applications, and solutions.” They tailor each solution to an individual customer’s environment and business needs.
iVision explained that configuration changes account for a significant number of performance-impacting events, particularly in light of the fact they are dealing with co-managed infrastructures spread across multiple customer locations. Prior to using LM Config, iVision used a mix of vendor-specific and third-party configuration management tools to manage networking equipment and web servers. iVision needed a solution that would provide visibility into configuration changes and reduce the time spent on root-cause analysis during a disruption.
LM Config Saves Time
Tom Lasswell, iVision’s Director for Engineering and Support Services, explained that in the event of an outage, his team would begin working through a half dozen possible causes. After working through the initial possibilities, they would eventually get to configuration changes as a potential cause. Tom described how a configuration change “could potentially set us back about 1-2 hours, including time spent tracking down what the change was and then deploying a solution.” This was, he continued, “after already having dedicated time to ensuring the issue didn’t have another cause, like hardware health or a loss of power.” LM Config saves iVision valuable time in an outage and allows them to keep their service offering at the highest level. The fact that it integrates with LogicMonitor is also a benefit. “One of the major reasons configuration management has been a challenge,” Tom continued, was due to the fact that “most configuration management tools are on-premises.” When dealing with dynamic and distributed infrastructures, an agentless, SaaS platform like LogicMonitor continues to be the most flexible option.
Compliance and Standardization
iVision needed a scalable solution that would let them alert on config changes to prevent deviation from their established best practices and standards. Tom explained how LM Config helps them maintain compliance across customer infrastructure: “For devices that we manage, we have an established set of iVision best practices for configurations. When a customer makes a change in the field, LM Config quickly sends an alert so we can investigate and immediately restore back to iVision standards.”
For iVision, “LM Config fits with the whole mindset of why we use LogicMonitor in the first place: its flexibility.”
